Colonel William Ledyard was an American patriot who fought at Fort Griswold, Groton against Benedict Arnold, traitor, and the British. When the British captured this fort, Colonel Ledyard and his men humbly surrendered. Colonel Ledyard yieleded his sword to a British officer. The officer took poor Colonel's sword and impaled him (Colonel Ledyard) with it.
He was born in Groton. He became a delegate to the Continental Congress and was the United States first foreign diplomat.
She was a famous Inuit guide to Artic explorers. She was a guide to American explorer Charles Francis Hal. She lived in Groton and died there in 1876. She is buried in the Starr Burying Ground.
